Chelsea Manning Eyes US Senate Seat For Maryland

Chelsea Manning will run for the U.S. Senate in Maryland.

Manning is one of four Democratic candidates who have filed to run for Senate in Maryland.

Manning is running as a Democrat for the seat now held by Sen.

She is running as a Democrat and will likely challenge two-term Senator Democrat Ben Cardin. Maryland is considered a safely Democratic state for this year's Senate race.

Manning came out publicly as transgender in 2013, shortly after being convicted on 20 charges including violations of the Espionage Act, theft and computer fraud.

In 2013, Manning was convicted for 35 years for the largest leak of classified documents in USA history, which included military information about the war in Iraq and Afghanistan and State Department cables.

The information Manning disclosed included low-level battlefield reports from Iraq and Afghanistan, Guantanamo prison camp detainee profiles and USA diplomatic correspondence.

Manning has long maintained that she leaked the documents in order to spark public debate. "This is about improving our standing in the world, this is about improving everything.' And maybe this can start a debate on that".

A representative for Manning did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Miss Manning was arrested in May 2010, while serving with the United States army in Iraq, after she confessed to a computer hacker, Adrian Lamo, that she was the source of Wikileaks' documents.
