Google Explains Meltdown, Spectre Fix Impact On Cloud Services

Intel rolled out some patches to fix the dreaded Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities, but it is now advising customers not to install these security updates.

Unlike many had predicted, Meltdown-the Intel-only vulnerability that is fixed by forcing the CPU to reload its TLB when running a kernel process-wasn't the biggest headache for Google.

But Nvidia still has to plug the security hole even if it could affect the performance of its GPUs, as is the case with other fixes for Spectre and Meltdown, though Nvidia hasn't detailed any ramifications the patches may carry.

Both Linux and Microsoft have started deploying operating system updates for this issue, albeit some Windows users reported BSOD errors earlier in the week, which led Microsoft to pause the rollout of the Spectre #1 patch for the time being.

In a on Intel's website, Navin Shenoy, general manager of the company's data centre group, said Intel had received reports about the issue and was working directly with data centre customers to "discuss" the issue. The news story was first reported in Wall Street Journal.

Applying the necessary patches to the CPU firmware is considered to be the most hard task in providing protection against Meltdown and Spectre, compared to the operating system and internet browser patches that have already been released.

Not only did we see considerable slowdowns for many applications, we also noticed inconsistent performance, since the speed of one application could be impacted by the behavior of other applications running on the same core. The company warned that its patches for chip flaws are buggy. We are working quickly with these customers to understand, diagnose and address this reboot issue.

Just like for Intel CPUs, AMD processors will also require a microcode update to fix this issue. However, Intel still recommends end-users should apply the updates for both OS and hardware.
