Hong Kong Protest Leaders Sentencing

A yellow umbrella is displayed by a pro-democracy activist outside the Court of Final Appeal in Hong Kong Tuesday Jan. 16 2018. Three young Hong Kong activists are making a last-ditch attempt to overturn prison sentences for their roles in sparking 201

Judge Andrew Chan earlier held them in contempt of court for failing to comply with an injunction to clear the pro-democracy protest camp.

Pronouncing the jail terms for Joshua Wong and Raphael Wong, the judge ordered that the sentences be executed separately from those the activists received for other cases.

Wong Ching-tak, the current union president, said the union's role in social movements and the threat of arrest had put off many applicants, stating that "not everyone is willing to stand at the front".

"In view of his overall involvement, I am of the view that the only appropriate punishment ... will be one of immediate imprisonment."

Meanwhile, both activists were taken into custody by security guards.

Benedict Rogers, founder and chair of the United Kingdom -based rights group Hong Kong Watch, tells TIME he was "surprised and shocked" by the ruling, but that it will be unlikely to derail Wong and his peers in their pursuit of universal suffrage and democratic norms in Hong Kong. Raphael Wong shouted as he was led away.

Hong Kong pro-democracy activists jailed for contempt of court for their role in the country's 2014 "Umbrella" protests.

The others received suspended sentences.

"They can lock up our bodies but they can't lock up our minds", the 21-year-old said as he entered the hearing.

Mr Wong is secretary-general of the Demosisto party, which calls for self-determination for Hong Kong, having risen to prominence as a student leader during the 2014 protests with the Scholarism movement he founded as a teenager.

Dozens of supporters gathered outside the High Court, chanting: "Civil disobedience, no fear!" and "I'm a Hong Konger, I want universal suffrage!"

The name of the movement arose from the use of umbrellas as a tool for peaceful resistance to the Hong Kong police during the protests.

Wednesday's jailings are seen as part of a broad crackdown on protesters who joined the Umbrella Movement, and scores more could go to jail in coming weeks in what activists reckon is an attempt to smother the democracy movement.

Hong Kong's 20 years under Chinese rule - A failed project?

Wong was jailed for six months in August on unlawful assembly charges for involvement in the storming of a fenced-off government forecourt known as Civic Square in September 2014, which sparked the wider Umbrella Movement rallies.

Hong Kong was promised a "high degree of autonomy" under the terms of its 1997 handover from Britain to China, but many say the city's traditional freedoms are now a thing of the past, as Beijing seeks to wield ever greater influence over the city's media, publishing, and political scene.
