Two polio workers gunned down in Quetta

Gunmen in Pakistan kill two women working to eradicate polio

The unidentified armed attackers shot dead two Balochistan Constabulary personnel and injured another at a flyover on Double Road of Quetta on Thursday morning.

The gunmen opened fire on the polio team in the Shalkot area, killing the two women in what law enforcers believe is a targeted attack, police said.

Militants say the polio vaccination campaigns are a cover for Western spies or a conspiracy to sterilize Pakistani children.

Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on Thursday strongly condemned the attack on a polio team in Quetta which resulted in the loss of two precious lives.

Pakistan is one of only three countries in the world, along with Nigeria and Afghanistan, that have failed to prevent the transmission of polio, according to the World Health Organization.

After it transpired that Dr Shakil Afridi, now jailed, had helped the U.S. track down and kill Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad a few years back, attacks on the polio teams have gone up especially in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. The incident happened in the middle of this town when assailants driving to a motorbike opened fire to the policemen. At least 1-3 policemen and a civilian were killed in the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan-claimed suicide attack in close proximity to a polio center.
