Snap lays off 22 employees amid content team restructure

CNN Is Axing Snapchat Daily News Show 'The Update'

Cheddar's report, which cites people familiar with the matter, suggests that a handful of employees in the firm's NY and London offices were also asked to relocate to the company's Los Angeles headquarters. The Information and Cheddar were first to report the layoffs. Others, it revealed, have been asked to relocate from the United Kingdom to Los Angeles.

And that's just the start.

The problems for Snapchat did not end there, as Cheddar released another bombshell Friday (19 January), exposing another memo showing strongly-worded legal threats against any staff caught leaking company data.

The layoffs came after Snap reported that its third-quarter revenue and user numbers dropped below Wall Street estimates. "The government, our investors, and other third parties can also seek their own remedies against you for what you disclosed".

Snapchat has always been a secretive company. RT has reached out to Snap for comment on the leaked memo. At the time, founder Evan Spiegel announced in a letter that the company would be slowing hiring efforts in 2018 and that managers would be asked to make "hard decisions" about teams that weren't performing well in order to get the company back on track. "This applies to outright leaks and any informal "off the record" conversations with reporters, as well as any confidential information you let slip to people who are not authorized to know that information". A redesign of the app is being implemented with a view to attracting a wider audience to the platform, however early reviews have slated the changes.

The job cuts affected a tiny percentage of the company, which had almost 3,000 employees as of its Q3 earnings report.
