IS German woman gets death in Iraq

Iraqi court sentences German woman to death over joining IS group

The Judge and spokesman of the court, Abdel Settar Bayraqdar, said in a statement that the German national, who was captured by Iraqi forces during the battle in the northern city Mosul a year ago, was convicted for providing "logistical support and assistance to the terrorist organization in committing crimes".

She was sentenced for providing "logistical support and helping the terrorist group carry out crimes", said court spokesman Abdel Settar Bayraqdar.

He said that the woman was accompanied with her two daughters, who also got married to members of the terrorist group. Scotland Yard has released her on bail while it continues its investigation. Both daughters later married militants.

The country fell into Daesh hands in June 2014, when the terror group started quickly seizing the territory throughout that year.

She is one of hundreds of foreign jihadists held by Iraqi authorities, who in December announced the defeat of IS after a gruelling three-year battle. Thousands of foreigners have been fighting for IS in Iraq and Syria.

The same month, a German teenage girl suspected of joining IS was arrested in Mosul, according to Germany's justice department. They include nationals from 14 countries, many of whom will be tried in the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

The New York-based group reported numerous accusations that security forces had used torture to extract confessions.

In September 2017, an Iraqi court sentenced to death by hanging a Russian man after finding him guilty of fighting for ISIS.
