Natalie Portman Shares The Horror Of Being Sexualized At Age 13

Tens of thousands in Civic Center Park for the Women's March on Denver

Demonstrators marched from Pershing Square to Los Angeles City Hall at 10 a.m, where a number of celebrities gave speeches to the crowds, including actresses Scarlett Johansson, Natalie Portman, Eva Longoria, Olivia Wilde and Viola Davis, who each urged the crowds to keep the momentum of the march going by voting at the midterm elections. "I understood very quickly, even as a 13-year-old, that if I were to express myself sexually I would feel unsafe and men would feel entitled to discuss and objectify my body to my great discomfort". She said she rejected any movie role that included a kissing scene and would consistently play up her "bookish" and "nerdy" dimensions.

"At 13 years old, the message from our culture was clear to me", she said.

"At that moment in my life, I too was discovering my own womanhood, my own desire and my own voice".

On the anniversary of American president Donald Trump's inauguration, demonstrators marched to denounce his views on immigration, abortion, LGBT and women's rights in support of female empowerment.

She explained: 'A countdown was started on my local radio show to my 18th birthday, euphemistically the date that I would be legal to sleep with. I know that every single day when I think of that, I know the trauma of those events are still with me today ...

People cheer during a women's march rally in Las Vegas. I am so grateful to be a woman, I wouldn't change it for the world.

This year's Women's March was spurred by the political climate as well as the innumerable recently surfaced accounts of men abusing women, and the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements that have resulted. I hope I'm defined by my input to the world, my ability to love and to have empathy. "One year ago, on this stage, I was very pregnant, and we talked about the beginning of a revolution".

"When I raise my hand, I am aware of all the women who are still in silence". We just can't agree on what that is.

Women returned in tens of thousands across Washington, New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and other cities of the USA and the world in solidarity continuing the protest against racism, gender bias, and sexual assault.

Johansson went on to detail some of her experience as a young woman working in Hollywood.
