Kentucky high school shooting leaves students, parents shaken

1 killed, many wounded in Kentucky school shooting

According to the Marshal County authorities, Bailey Holt, 15, and Preston Cope, 15, died as a result of injuries sustained after a 15-year-old male walked into the school with a pistol and started firing. Police say five of the shooting victims are still in critical condition as of Tuesday night. The girl died at the scene and the boy died at a hospital. There was a Marshall County Sheriff's Department School Resource Officer on site at the time of the shooting.

At least one person is dead and several others are wounded after a shooting at a high school in Marshall County, KY.

Among the patients was the 15-year-old boy who did not survive; he was shot in the head, doctors said.

Many are turning to each other and their faith to get through the mass shooting that shook the commonwealth of Kentucky.

"This is a wound that is going to take a long time to heal", Bevin said, "and for some in this community, will never fully heal".

Speaking on the floor of the U.S. Senate, McConnell says his staff in western Kentucky is at Marshall County High School and is in close contact with local officials. Both the suspect and the victim were students, according to officials.

Marshall County deputies arrested the gunman, who remains unidentified.

State police said the crime scene was secured. According to WKMS, Hubbard hid beneath a set of stairs with another girl as they listened to the screams of their teachers. "Just terrified for their kids", Mr Garland said.

Family members of all affected students have been notified, however further information pertaining to the case, including the shooter's identity and possible motive, will not be released so as not to compromise the investigation.

"I'm distraught from all of it", student Greg Rodgers, 17, told NBC News.

Earlier Tuesday, Bevin called the shooting "a tremendous tragedy" in a statement posted on Twitter.

"Something you don't ever think you'd get", Ray said. In 1997, a 14-year-old killed three people and injured five more during a prayer circle at Heath High School, located 35 miles away from Benton in the town of West Paducah.
