White House Cites Daily Caller Report In Calling Out Russia Mania

Dana Milbank: What on Earth does President Trump want?

US President Donald Trump today said he was open to a path to citizenship for some younger undocumented immigrants as part of his negotiations with Democrats, provided he gets Congressional funding for a wall across the border with Mexico.

In exchange, he said he wanted to offer the Dreamers protection from deportation and an "incentive" of citizenship, perhaps in 10 to 12 years.

Trump has given Congress until March to come up with a plan to protect the almost 700,000 young people who had been protected from deportation and given the right to work legally in the country under the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA.

Trump said his proposal would include a request for $25 billion for the border wall, $5 billion for other border security programs, measures to curb family sponsorship of immigrants, and an overhaul of or end to the visa lottery system.

The Senate is slated to vote today at noon to proceed on a proposal that will fund the government through February 8.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders blasted a reporter Wednesday, taking issue with his seeming accusation that President Trump is "complicit" in recent school shootings. Trump also wants to limit the family members that immigrants are able to sponsor to join them in the USA and either replace or transform a visa lottery aimed at increasing diversity.

Another issue is the unaccompanied minor and family unit program, which Trump has called "one of the largest loopholes in US border security".

A January 2018 Harvard-Harris poll found 81 percent of respondents want 1 million or fewer total immigrants allowed into the USA per year, which is fewer than 2015's total of 1.38 million. On Tuesday night, Trump sent out a tweet insulting Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, referring to him as "Cryin", while threatening to hold DACA hostage.

The White House had indicated that it would not reopen negotiations on immigration until the shutdown ended. The White House estimates that could cover up to 1.8 million people.

"A lot of times people say you need to separate faith and work, and my answer is that you can't".

"I think the president is doing great, and I think that it is obvious in the accomplishments he's had in the first nine months in office", Sanders said in the late-October interview.

The President made his comments to a group of reporters who were meeting with White House chief of staff John Kelly at the White House.

Meanwhile, Senators started a fresh search Wednesday for compromise immigration legislation, while President Donald Trump and his lawyers reportedly were gearing up for the prospect of an appearance before the Justice Department's special counsel office investigating Russian Federation collusion. Both senators are the deputy leaders of their respective parties and sit on a Senate Judiciary Committee subcommittee on immigration policy.
