New theory about House of Horrors family emerges

The parents of 13 children who lived in the "house of horrors" allegedly fed their two dogs better than they fed their children.

The allegations of torture seem impossible to comprehend next to the family photos circulated in the press that show the smiling group on days out at places like Disneyland.

In fact, the kids may feel upset right now that they are separated from their parents, even though the Turpin elders have been accused of child abuse and torture, according to Jessica Borelli, a psychologist and professor at the University of California at Irvine.

Twelve of the Turpins' 13 children, authorities said, were captives in the couple's tract house on Muir Woods Road and appeared to have undergone years of abuse and starvation.

Prof Browne, director of the Centre for Forensic and Family Psychology at the University of Nottingham, says it is more common to see cases where there is one child and the parent or parents can not cope, so the situation spirals out of control.

District Attorney Mike Hestrin last week characterized the alleged mistreatment inflicted by the pair as "horrific, " describing how the 13 victims endured "severe neglect that intensified over time". The girl also claimed that they were planning their escape for two years. "We tend to think of this as women being coerced into action by a man, as it is more common, but that is not always true".

While the children were deprived of food, the Turpin parents ate well and even tormented the children by putting apple and pumpkin pies on the kitchen counter, but not letting them have any, Riverside County District Attorney Mike Hestrin said.

Also, Bailey said, it was probably no accident that the Turpins allegedly starved their children. They were married in 1985 in Pearisburg, Virginia, when she was 16 years old and he was 23.

David's family also commented on the situation.

Julia, a mother herself, said the idea of a parent treating their child in this way "blows me away".

Louise's elopement and teenage wedding caused a rift in the family and her parents eventually divorced, reported DailyMailTV.

This, in turn, can create a relationship that has some elements of Stockholm syndrome, where abducted individuals identify with the abductor to ensure their own survival. Breaking down in tears, she said that she never thought to go to police to have them check in on her nieces and nephews because her sister and brother-in-law were notoriously "private" people.

The animals, one white and one black, appear healthy and friendly and are leash-trained, Senior Animal Control Officer Christina Avila said in a statement from the city of Perris.

How can such levels of abuse be unknown?

.

And now the case has taken a darker turn after police reportedly said they are considering sending cadaver dogs to search for possible human remains.

"For example, modern slavery victims go to work every day".

Police discovered a different scene when they went to the California home.

In the Turpin case, the children appear not to have had access to help.

David Turpin apparently ran a small school out of his home. The children were homeschooled and nearly completely sheltered from the outside world. After that, whenever he asked Louise about them, she had an excuse of why she could not let her children speak to him.

It was exposed last week when one of the children managed to escape the house through a window and raise the alarm.

Hestrin said the children were severely malnourished, resulting in cognitive impairment and a lack of basic knowledge.
