Nutella 'riots' spread across France as shoppers go nuts

'Ce n'est pas normal!' French shoppers brawl over discounted Nutella

The store slashed the price of Nutella by 70%, bringing it down from €4.50 ($5.59) to €1.40 ($1.74).

Shoppers at a French supermarket chain physically fought each other Thursday over 33-ounce jars of discounted Nutella. A supermarket employee told local media that they were trying to get in between the customers but they were pushing them. One woman had her hair pulled, an older woman got a box thrown at her head, another person had a bloodied hand.

At a store in L'Horme one customer received a black eye in the melee. A French supermarket chain recently accomplished both, but probably not in the way they intended, after putting Nutella on sale, as this video from The Guardian reveals.

Ferrero, which makes Nutella, said it regretted the violence but added that the promotion was entirely the responsibility of Intermarche, reported Le Progres. Customers were seen scrambling across the stores, shoving other shoppers out of the way, to grab as many jars as possible, reported The Associated Press.

Ferraro, the company who owns Nutella, publicly condemned this egregious and unsafe display. And let's just say that people went nuts as lines were formed outside the supermarket only for things to get out of hands once everyone rushed inside.

In countries all over the world, over 800 pounds of the creamy chocolate hazelnut spread are consumed every year. "We were on the point of calling the police".

Meanwhile in the UK, Ferret, the company behind the brand, said it tweaked the formula following a report by a german consumer group, taking out some of its chocolate content. The Ferrero family created the creamy spread back in 1940 in the Piedmont region of Italy, which is known for its high-quality hazelnuts.
