Google credits AI for stopping more rogue Android apps in 2017

Google rolls out update for 'Files Go' app, here are the new features

The company took down over 700,000 apps that violated Play Stores policies a year ago (a 70 percent increase over 2016), and it was considerably better at pulling rogue apps in time to avoid infections. Google has also made it harder for those developers to re-join Google Play under different accounts as well in an attempt to stop this abuse. "We are committed to make Google Play the most trusted and safe app store in the world", Kleidermacher and Ahn wrote. The US and Germany were kept apart by Taiwan on the App Store and South Korea on Google Play. Last September, Google had to delete 50 apps that had been downloaded millions of times before it was discovered. CBS's mobile SVOD app more than doubled its revenue year-on-year, driven primarily by Star Trek: Discovery. In 2017, Google took down more than a quarter of a million of impersonating apps. Google also pulled tens of thousands of apps for having inappropriate content, which were flagged by Google's machine learning algorithms and then removed by the company's human reviewers. Even though Google Play Protect is good at catching a lot of these malicious apps, sometimes they still get through. Basically, through the use of improved AI, the company has been able to provide more protections for Android users.

As far as copycat apps were concerned, Google removed more than 250,000 of those types of apps. They often try to make their apps look like existing popular apps, for example, to trick users into installing them.

Some 79 percent of the value came from digital content and service purchases within apps, 15 percent from mobile advertisements, and the rest from payments for app downloads, according to the association Bitkom.

The PHA includes those that are malware or those that are trying to commit fraud without your consent or knowledge. Do you think Google's review processes are stringent enough? That's roughly twice global consumer spending on apps and in the Play store, which reached $5.5 billion with annual growth of 20%.

That number was up 70 percent compared to 2016, but 99 percent of those apps were removed before anyone could install them. How safe do you feel with Google Play Protect overall?
