Fox Poised to Win Rights to NFL Thursday Night Package

Report: Thursday Night Football is heading to Fox next season

Thursday Night Football is reportedly moving to Fox in 2018, according to John Ourand of Sports Business Journal.

While the deal has not been completed, Bloomberg's Scott Soshnick and Lucas Shaw reported Fox "submitted a bid that's higher than the $45 million a game CBS and NBC agreed to pay past year". The NFL Network will air the other Thursday night games. Live sports seems to be something that Rupert Murdoch and his family wants to prove to the market that Fox is still interested in, people familiar with the Thursday Night Football deal told Bloomberg.

The deal will carry well past the network's separation from its sister studio, 20th Century Fox TV, which is being sold to Disney in a deal expected to go through late this year or in 2019. NFL Network will still be allowed to broadcast games, and a separate digital partner will also be involved. It apparently won't be the network's A-team of Joe Buck and Troy Aikman.

"Guys don't have time to recover", wide receiver said after teammate ruptured his Achilles tendon during a Thursday night game in November.

Fox will continue to broadcast Sunday games on top of Thursday ones. (Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman, for example, has publicly called it a "poopfest.") NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell somewhat addressed their concerns in a conference call Wednesday, saying that the league will work with the NFL Players Association "to make the shorter week more attractive in a way that is better for our players".

CBS said in a statement, "We explored a responsible bid for Thursday Night Football but in the end are very pleased to return to entertainment programming on television's biggest night". Also of note is that FOX's top National Football League broadcasting team of Joe Buck and Troy Aikman will not be calling the games, which is a change from the National Football League previously requiring CBS and NBC to use their top duos for the broadcasts.
