Google is marking the beginning of Black History Month by celebrating historian, scholar, educator and author Carter G. Woodson with a new Doodle.

Scott Parsons, the president of the Black Cultural Society, said it's "very nice" to receive funding from the government for Black History Month events this year, but said he also shares Douglas's concerns.

Tuesday marks the first day of Black History Month.

For information on more Black History Month events, visit The Center for University Access and Inclusion website.

Woodson founded "Negro History Week", which preceded Black History Month.

Men of Excellence, an organization that supports minority males on campus, has hosted the "Continuing the Legacy Walk" since 2015. He was only the second African American to win a doctorate, following in the formidable footsteps of W.E.B. This year's walk will take place at noon February 7 in the Lyceum Circle. The week was created to bring to the attention and magnify the accomplishments of African Americans.

"The more we learn about each other, the more we understand each other". The kickoff event, including vendors and performances, will be open to the public from 3-6 p.m. on February 3.

Other Black History Month events at Western New Mexico University include "Tribute to the Little Rock Nine", a presentation by Dr. Carlos Richard of OR, and a free screening of "Baltimore Rising", the documentary about Freddie Gray's passing while in police custody.

With everything that is going on is the world today, we need to embrace the history that benefited America as a whole. The Act also spanned over ceasing racism and to ban the exclusion of African-Americans in schools, at places of employment, retail stores, recreational facilities, and rental institutions.

The image features Woodson surrounded by books and writing pieces related to African-American history. "We need to tell the full story of how this legacy of inequality and violence affects the experience of students, faculty and staff", Walton said. As a black woman from an underserved, underperforming public school in Richmond, California, many in my community didn't expect me to achieve much beyond the four corners of my neighborhood.
