BCCI announces cash prize for U19 World cup winning Indian team

Jadeja's star rose quickly after the World Cup

On a tense day at New Zealand's Bay Oval cricket grounds, it was the Indian U-19 team that held its nerve through a toss loss and rain delay to beat Australia by eight wickets and take home the ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup trophy.

Electing to bat first, Australia were dismissed for 216 runs in 47.2 overs. In response, Team India achieved the target of 217 runs only in 38.5. Prithvi Shaw, Manjot Kalra and others thanked their coach in post-match interviews. He was branded the next Virat Kohli - another Delhi boy - by the Indian media after his heroics in the tournament, which also included unbeaten century in the final, incidentally against Australia as well.

Giving full credit to coach Rahul Dravid, Tendulkar said the team was in safe hands.

India outplayed Pakistan in another one-sided clash between the two teams as they completed a mammoth 203-run win to set up a final clash with Australia, a replay of the earlier group stage match. He was gracious in defeat, happy to credit India's brilliance and pick up lessons from their success story to better his own game.

The gulf between them and other teams was clearly evident. The winning margins in all the matches show their dominance. Meanwhile, Indian batsman Shubman Gill from Punjab was chosen as the Player of the Tournament who scored 31 runs in 30 balls in the final match. It came after he claimed four wickets in the semi-final against Afghanistan, following on from Lloyd Pope's eight-wicket haul against England and Jason Ralston's 7-15 against Papua New Guinea. It was only fitting that he reached the three figures in the last over of the final. Desai hit the winning boundary, sending the team members and the packed crowd into frenzy. Kamlesh Nagarkoti picked up three wickets (3/18) and Shivam Mavi (2/27) and Abhishek Sharma (2/11) scalped two wickets each to steer the 2012 champions to the last four with a 131-run win. Left-arm spinner Anukul Roy finished as the highest wicket-taker of the tournament with 14 scalps from six games.

Combining firstly with Param Uppal for a 75-run partnership before a 49-run stand with Nathan McSweeney had the Aussies sitting at 5-183.

Earlier, India's leading wicket-taker in the event, Anukul Roy (2/32), had sent back Uppal in similar fashion as offered a simple catch back to the bowler while attempting to play against the spin.

But with little pressure placed on them over the past three weeks, Sangha hopes his bowlers can expose their middle order on Saturday to reverse the result. Now, with a winner's medal around his neck and the Trophy beside him, the emotional side of him surfaced again.
