Robert Mueller is 'properly operating' in probe, Justice Department says

President Trump is hoping the newly declassified GOP memo alleging bias in the FBI's Russian Federation investigation will help him build a public argument against how one official handled the case: Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein.

Rosenstein "appeared surprised" by Trump's question and "awkwardly" answered, "Of course, we're all on your team, Mr. President". These cases also concern Mueller and, with the help and approval of Rosenstein, far exceeded even the illegitimate authority given to him to conduct grand jury investigations of President Trump and those around him. Sessions did not elaborate, but the Justice Department's inspector general is tasked with investigating employee misconduct.

Rosenstein seems to be on a thin ethical tightrope without a net.

We now know that nearly every accusation leveled against the president with regard to so-called "Russian collusion" actually reflects the actions of what amounts to a cabal of Democratic Party operatives working with Federal Bureau of Investigation and Justice Department fellow-travellers.

"You figure that one out", Trump said Friday.

"It's been very clear throughout the process in the White House, there are no conversations and no considerations about firing Rod Rosenstein", Gidley told CNN's John Berman.

Interested in Russia Investigation?

Trump has expressed suspicion of Rosenstein before.

While searching for Comey's replacement, Trump interviewed acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe.

Sessions yesterday defended Rosenstein during a public appearance, saying both he and the DOJ's No. 3 official, Rachel Brand, "represent the kind of quality and leadership that we want in the department". The theory goes that Trump could then install a crony in Rosenstein's place, who could fire Mueller or quash in the Trump-Russia investigation.

A few days after the encounter between Trump and Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general testified before a House committee that he saw no good reason to fire Mueller.

Before he gave Comey the boot, he'd asked him to go easy on ousted National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, who was sacked by Trump weeks after the president had learned that Flynn had lied about his contacts with Russian agents. "I think we should let Rosenstein, Mueller and everybody else do their jobs and wait to see what the outcome is". I'll also take strong action to shut down the corrupt Clinton Foundation, which is rife with Clinton bribery and other illegalities.

Trump, it's important to remember, fired FBI Director James Comey after trying unsuccessfully to get the bureau chief to pledge his loyalty to the president.

Later Friday, White House spokesperson Raj Shah said on CNN's "Erin Burnett OutFront" that "no changes" would be made at the Justice Department.
