Trump's Approval Rating at 42 Percent; Up 10 Points

President Donald Trump salutes during a welcome ceremony at U.S. Pacific Command, Friday Nov. 3 2017 in Aiea Hawaii

President Donald Trump's job-approval rating in Vermont is the lowest of any of the 50 states, according a Gallup poll released Tuesday.

The poll also showed a dramatic increase, from 24 to 37 percent, of respondents who think America is heading in the "right direction", in the last month.

According to a new Quinnipiac poll, nearly three-quarters of Republicans think President Donald Trump is a good role model for children, while more than two-thirds of Americans on average disagree. Maryland, New York, Connecticut and Rhode Island round out the states where fewer than one-third of the respondents approved. The full results by state appear at the end of this article. Polls from multiple sources, including Gallup and NBC/The Wall Street Journal, found Trump ended his first year as the most unpopular president on record.

The imbalance reflects the fact that the bottom group includes some of the most populous states in the nation, particularly California, New York and IL.

Trump's overall approval rating averaged 38 percent in 2017, according to Gallup, but his reception varied highly among states. Naturally, this is reflected in Trump's state-level ratings, with only 12 states giving him 50% or higher approval, compared with 41 for Obama in 2009.

And it looks like the president's coattails going into this fall's midterm elections may have gotten stronger.

West Virginia gave Trump his highest rating, with 61 percent.

Thirty-eight per cent said they'd like Congress to impeach Trump, with 57 per cent saying lawmakers should lay off. Every party, gender, education, age, and racial group - with the exception of Republicans and white voters without a college degree - say the president falls short.

When New Britain Mayor Erin Stewart announced her candidacy on Monday Democrats quickly responded with a YouTube video that referred to her as an "enabler of the Republican Trump agenda".
