Pistons trade Willie Reed to Chicago for point guard Jameer Nelson

The 2018 National Basketball Association trade deadline is off to a roaring start.

The Bulls acquired Nelson last week in the Nikola Mirotic trade. Reed, who's one-game into a six-game suspension for domestic violence, probably won't either. Reed will be waived, per Vincent Goodwill of NBC Sports Chicago. Bobby Marks from ESPN reported that the Bulls created a $1.43M trade exception with the trade. Combo guard Langston Galloway also plays point guard and is the current backup behind Smith.

The Pistons are adding point guard depth as they wait for starter Reggie Jackson to return from injury.

Nelson is no stranger to moving around. Though that group has performed decently, Pistons president/coach Stan Van Gundy is getting a familiar reinforcement - Jameer Nelson. So far this season, he is shooting 41 percent from the floor and 36.4 percent from long-range distance. Nelson averaged 5.1 points, 2.2 rebounds and 3.6 assists over 43 games this season with the Pelicans.

Jackson has played just 33 games this season, and while he has performed well on the court averaging 14.6 points and 5.5 assists, he needs to play more to make his five-year, $80 million contract worth it.

The Pistons' second and final deal sent newcomer Brice Johnson to the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for forward James Ennis. The 23-year-old Johnson was a first-round pick by the Clipper In 2016 out of North Carolina University. The Pistons have effectively made Griffin their backup center since the trade, using him and Anthony Tolliver together when Andre Drummond is on the bench.

Considering how hamstrung the Pistons are with regards to salary, the organization will likely value the opportunity to use early Bird rights to retain his services.

In the short term, the Pistons should be marginally better on the floor.
