Schulz Abruptly Drops Bid to Be Merkel's Next Foreign Minister

The 'grand coalition' to push Eurozone growth

Under the terms of the deal struck between Merkel and Schulz earlier this week, the SPD will keep the foreign ministry it held in the last government and also take over the finance ministry from the CDU.

Former European Parliament speaker and leader of the German Social Democrat party (SPD) Martin Schulz announced today he will abandon his plan to serve as German foreign minister, seeking to end a party row over his role and boost support among members for a new "grand coalition" with Angela Merkel's conservatives.

Christian democratic union (CDU) leader and German chancellor Angela Merkel, Christian Social Union (CSU) leader horst seehofer and Social Democratic Party (SPD) Leader Martin Schulz gave a statement after the coalition talks to form a new coalition government in berlin, Germany, February 7, 2018. This had prompted unrest within Merkel's conservative ranks.

The move by Schmidt, a conservative, effectively allowed the extension in glyphosate use within the European Union, despite opposition from France and from the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) in Germany's current government coalition.

'I hereby declare my decision not to join the federal government and at the same time I sincerely hope that this will end the personnel debates within the SPD, ' Mr Schulz said.

Mr Joffe added the election last year was a "popular vote of no-confidence" after losing supporters to the Alternative for Germany (AfD) following years of political turmoil after Europe's migration crisis in 2015, insisting it is now a "cosmic joke" the two parties are joining forces.

Schulz, 62, will also step down as party chairman, and his likely, 47-year-old successor, Andrea Nahles, said the party would now focus on policy content ahead of the ballot.

A Forsa poll had shown nearly three-quarters of Germans thought it would be wrong for Schulz to become foreign minister. He told broadcaster SWR he expected a minority government to take charge in Germany, at least for a few months, if SPD members heeded his call.

The draft, published on Wednesday on the homepage of Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservative CDU party, did not indicate a schedule for ending glyphosate use.

Grassroots organizations in the SPD, including the party's youth wing, are already campaigning for a no-vote on the coalition deal.

Merkel faced an uphill struggle to maintain power for another four years following a disastrous election campaign.

However, the agreement is subject to the approval of the total SPD party members, over 460,000 in number, in the coming weeks.
