South Africa's Ramaphosa: ANC Working to Resolve Fate of Zuma

South Africa: Nelson Mandela Foundation Remembers Madiba's Release

"There is no disagreement about where we want to go (on Zuma) but the tactics on how to do that is the responsibility of leadership", Mantashe told the rally.

While some ANC leaders are appealing to South Africans to wait patiently for a resolution, the political opposition speculates that Zuma is trying to secure concessions, including protection from prosecution in exchange for his resignation.

Holding the microphone for Mandela that day was a young Ramaphosa, then a trade union leader.

"But if he is going to be leading on the basis of the cacophony of noises around us, he will commit mistakes - it is [for the] protection of the president of the ANC to tell analysts to back off".

Ramaphosa said the country needed to reverse the damage of seeing its key state-owned enterprises (SoEs) corrupted for the gain of a single family - a veiled reference to mounting evidence of wrongdoing that enriched the controversial Gupta brothers and embroiled Zuma and several of his key ministers.

Ramaphosa met with Zuma on Tuesday, after he refused to step down during a meeting with the top six on Sunday.

ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa called for patience following a meeting with Zuma earlier in the week. Many reporters were camped outside Zuma's official residence in Pretoria.

Ramaphosa says discussions that he has held with Zuma had to be conducted with "care and purpose" and with the aim of uniting South Africans.

The deal would require Zuma to disclose any and all criminal acts, and would also require him to name others who were involved or complicit in the acts.

Mantashe said ANC officials would meet on Saturday to discuss the transition, but Zuma will not be part of the meeting.

"We know you want closure - we will be doing so keeping our eyes on what is in the interests of all our people", he said to loud applause.

"If there ever was a time when we should be working together, this water crisis is the time", he said. Here are some South Africans' take on the state of the country. Give them space to manage that situation carefully and precisely.so that we don't stumble.

The ANC on Sunday asked Zuma to step down after more than eight scandal-plagued years in office.

The uneasiness was heightened after the state of the nation address was for the first time postponed indefinitely last week.

The timing and circumstances of the early exit of Zuma, who is under intense pressure to resign, pose a challenge for the party that was the main anti-apartheid movement during white minority rule and has led South Africa since the first all-race elections in 1994.
