Google Shipped 3.9 Million Pixel Units Last Year

Google shipped 3.9 million Pixel phones last year, IDC says

Google's only on its second generation of phones (the Nexus phones, which were never driven by a strategy of scale, don't really count), but if you compare its 2017 shipments to Apple's second-generation iPhone, the 3G, which sold 1 million units inits opening weekend, you start to see that it's very clear very few people are leaping onto the Pixel train, despite a lavish marketing campaign.

Google won't say how many Pixel phones it shipped in 2017, but one analyst from the research firm IDC has a number: 3.9 million.

Even HMD Global, which began selling Nokia-branded smartphones previous year, sold more phones than Google. The numbers suggest that Google still has a long way to go before it can challenge the iPhones.

Further, the original Pixel and Pixel XL were released in October 2016, meaning they were only available for a portion of that year whereas they were available for the whole of 2017. Based on its most recent sales figures, Apple was selling nearly 850,000 iPhones each day in the first quarter of 2018.

The third reason is that Google doesn't have a strong retail presence. Get 15% OFF your Google Pixel 2 case or Google Pixel ... Over 90 percent of phone sales are sold through carriers. IDC's Francisco Jeronimo has been spilling the sales stats on the Pixel range, and the good news is that Google is on the right trajectory.

One thing that's clearly impacting sales is distribution. It took Google a full year to sell 3.9 million Pixel phones.

Pixel smartphone sales are certainly heading in the right direction, validating the company's recent push into making Google hardware.

Quick math shows it took Apple just 6.5 days and Samsung only 4.4 days to sell the same number of smartphones. Its smartphones compete against the best the market has to offer, featuring cutting-edge hardware, vanilla Android and, unlike many of its droid-toting siblings, three years of support.
