Iran Can Meet India's Energy Demands: President

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani addresses the gathering after offering prayers at Makkah Masjid in Hyderabad on Friday. All India Majlis-eIttehad-ul Muslimeen chief Asaduddin Owaisi is also seen in the

"IRCON, India, and CDTIC, Iran, who are engaged in discussions, were tasked to finalise the technical parameters and financing options for the project in a time bound manner", the statement said.

The two sides also agreed to enhancing cooperation in the maritime domain.

India had voted against Iran at the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) in November 2009 and this rankled Tehran at the time, though it merits recall that there was unanimity among the five UN Security Council permanent members, including Russian Federation and China on quarantining Tehran's nuclear ambitions.

Commenting on the recent terrorist attacks in Afghanistan, President Rouhani asserted that India and Iran were against terrorism and steps were being taken to eliminate terrorism not only in South Asia but also in Iran and the Middle East.

The Prime Minister said the two countries wanted to see Afghanistan safe and prosper. President Rouhani also acknowledged the aspiration of India to play a greater role in global fora.

In addition, four MoUs between the trade bodies of the two countries were signed on the sidelines of the visit.

Meanwhile, he lauded the cultural confluence and religious harmony in India, and said, "Whatever faith different communities in India have, they co-exist peacefully, and Iran appreciates that".

He was addressing a congregation after Friday prayers at Mecca Masjid in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad during his three-day visit to India.

India and Iran today signed nine agreements in order to further the bilateral cooperation between the two sides.

In his address, Rouhani thanked the Indian government for investment which helped in the development of key infrastructure in Iran, particularly connected to Chabahar, and said that similar cooperation will be seen in areas of energy, natural gas, petroleum and petro products.

Iran and India can jointly fight against terrorism and drug trafficking, he said.

However, the much-awaited deal on the Farzad B gas field remained elusive as the ongoing talks between the oil ministries of the two countries remained inconclusive.

Iran has been trying to reach a better bargain with India after crippling economic sanctions against it were eased following its 2015 nuclear pact with six world powers-the US, UK, Russia, France, China, and Germany, according to news reports. "It does not pursue politics without ethics", Rouhani asserted in a hard-hitting speech where he also blamed America for conflicts in West Asia. This is a special arrangement, sources said, which is only allowed for Nepal and Bhutan.

One sector that will engage the two sides is the modest trade relationship.
