Samuel Girard Wins 2018 Olympic Short-Track Speedskating 1000m Gold Medal

1998 was a long time ago

The madness of short-track speedskating is such that when the second semifinal for the men's 1,000 metres ended Saturday night, Samuel Girard was last in the group, literally bumped by teammate and close friend Charles Hamelin out of a spot in the final.

Girard led for much of the race and finished first in 1:24.650.

Seo Yira of South Korea got up from the crash on Saturday to take the bronze. Lim was tucked behind the leaders when backmarker Sandor Liu of Hungary move up for an attack. Liu, who won Korea's first gold at the Games with victory in the 1,500m a week ago, got back on the ice to finish fourth. I think it wasn't the thing to do at that moment.

"He would have loved to have this medal here, but he's happy that I'm the one who has it", Girard said.

Girard easily reached the podium.

Hamelin, the victor of three golds and competing in his fourth and final Olympics, got up and was in Girard's corner when he stepped onto the ice for the final.

It's seemed like ages since Mikaela Shiffrin won the gold medal in the Giant Slalom at the PyeongChang Games. "We were ready to do a great race in the semis", said Hamelin. "It's too bad because I had the legs to do better".

"There were so many thoughts rushing through my head", Krueger said.

Yuki Tsubota of Whistler, B.C., was the top Canadian - and the only one of three to make the final.

Olivier Rochon of Gatineau, Que., grabbed the sixth and final qualifying spot for Sunday's final at 6 a.m. ET with 124.34 points.

Wojtek Wolski scored for Canada in the shootout while Maxim Lapierre, Derek Roy, Rene Bourque and Maxim Noreau missed. Homan's crushing of the US followed three straight losses, a performance that few had anticipated from a team that was heavily favoured to win the gold.

Koe's Calgary team had a trying three ends, starting with giving up a steal of two in the sixth in their loss to Sweden.

Fellow Canadians Jane Channell (3:29.07) and Mirela Rahneva (3:29.52) finished 10th and 12th, respectively. She is also the first woman to medal in back-to-back Olympics in skeleton.

The Swedes now lead the men's standings at 5-0, with Canada right behind at 4-1.
