Teen survivors of Parkland shooting plan national walk out

Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student Emma Gonzalez refuted President Donald Trump's suggestion that her community didn't take action to prevent a shooter from killing 17 at the school in a fiery Saturday speech.

The rampage just before the close of classes at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School was at least the eighth shooting this year at a USA school or college resulting in injury or death.

Hundreds of people rallied outside a courthouse in the USA state of Florida to demand stricter gun control laws in the aftermath of one of the deadliest school shootings in the country's modern history. Days after the killings, a sombre series of vigils and funerals were being held in and around Parkland, a Fort Lauderdale suburb of about 32,000 people.

Dividing that sum by the number of shooting victims in the United States so far this year, Gonzalez asked: "Is that how much these people are worth to you, Trump?" "It is unknown what he is buying the gun for", said a report written by department officials after investigators interviewed the teenager, the Sun Sentinel said. The agency concluded Cruz had not been mistreated by his mother, was receiving adequate care from a mental health counselor and was attending school.

According to the paper, DCF's investigation was completed that November 12.

So my focus is not on having or not having a gun debate.

Stunned by last week's bloodiest high school shooting in USA history, students across the country were mobilizing on Sunday for stronger gun laws, while Florida officials contemplated when to reopen their badly shaken school.

California's law also empowers police to petition for the protective orders, which can require authorities to remove firearms for up to one year.

"Because of these (current) gun laws, people that I know, people that I love, have died", Delaney Tarr, a senior at the school, told the rally.

Some people in online posts called for a Civil Rights-era style boycott of schools until gun laws are changed.

In addition, the Federal Bureau of Investigation admitted on Friday that it failed to investigate a warning that Cruz possessed a gun and the desire to kill. That information was not forwarded to the FBI's Miami office, in what agency officials called a breakdown in protocol.

Protesters will echo the same sentiments as students from Parkland, Florida.

"To every politician taking donations from the NRA, shame on you!" said student Emma Gonzalez, who criticised Donald Trump for the multi-million dollar support the U.S. president has received from the powerful gun lobby group, the National Rifle Association.

He and some other Republican political leaders have said mental illness prompted the massacre. Following the deaths of his adoptive parents, Cruz was taken in by James and Kimberly Snead, and their 17-year-old son, who went to school with Cruz.

"At this point, I don't even know if the adults in power who are funded by the NRA, I don't think we need them anymore, because they are going to be gone by the midterm election, " Gonzalez said on "Face the Nation" on CBS.

Cruz's lawyer, Broward Public Defender Howard Finkelstein, told ABC News he is willing to have his client plead guilty immediately in return for the prosecution agreeing to take the death penalty off the table.

On the forum, he posted videos of himself shooting a rifle, and when quizzed by another member about his interest in body armor, replied he was interested because of "school shooters". The paper said it also received a copy of the report.
