Raj Shah: Trump Has Handled Russia Better Than Obama

Illustration by Alex Castro The Verge

"The Fake News Media never fails", Trump tweeted, presumably referring to coverage he believes has played down those details.

Trump's tweetstorm came on the heels of US special counsel Robert Mueller's Friday indictment of Russians and Russian companies, including the Internet Research Agency, which is based in Saint Petersburg and best known for its online trolling.

President Donald Trump wasn't the only candidate Russians chose to support as part of a scheme to sow discord in the USA political system.

Mueller described a sophistication beyond what Congress had understood about the Russian meddling in the election. A later report from The Post quoted a senior Obama administration official as saying the response to Russia's hacking "is the hardest thing about my entire time in government to defend", adding, "I feel like we sort of choked".

The Obama administration also slapped sanctions on Moscow in December 2016 for the election year efforts.

Indeed, though Trump said Sunday that he never denied there was Russian election meddling, he has emphasized Russian President Vladimir Putin's denial.

Writing in the Christian Science Monitor in 1982, Daniel Southerland - who would go on to become executive editor of USA government-funded Radio Free Asia - called President Ronald Reagan's claim that Soviet secret agents were sent to the U.S.to foster the American nuclear freeze movement "an embarrassment for his administration". It was a known fact that Putin hated Hillary Clinton. The indictment did not connect any dots between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation and it stopped short of suggesting the misinformation campaign tilted the election.

Trump was continuing his efforts to pin Russian collusion on the Democrats and their nominee Hillary Clinton. Obama also never moved to provide Ukraine with weapons during the Russian-backed insurgency in the country.

Prigozhin himself has been under USA sanctions since 2016 over the conflict in Ukraine.

"Russia started their anti-US campaign in 2014, long before I announced that I would run for president", he tweeted Friday".

USA lawmakers - both Democrats and Republicans - and top national security officials in the Trump administration offered the same advice publicly and privately, often clashing with Trump's Twitter stream: the United States remains staunchly committed to its European allies, is furious with the Kremlin about election interference and isn't contemplating a preemptive strike on North Korea to halt its nuclear program. Instead, on several occasions, Trump defended Putin or attempted to explain his point of view.

But Trump has yet to impose those sanctions on Russian Federation.

Trump has also repeatedly denied Russian Federation meddled in the election, only recently acknowledging some interference.

President Trump on Friday defended his presidential campaign through his Twitter handle saying that there was no crime committed by his campaign team.

But when it comes to Americans, it's somehow left only to Trumpsters to argue that the U.S.is not a huge snowball that can melt from a little Russian trolling.

"I don't believe they interfered", Trump said. Trump wrote on Twitter on Saturday.

The main action Trump has taken on guns in office has been to sign a resolution blocking an Obama-era rule created to keep guns out of the hands of certain mentally disabled people.
