George and Amal Clooney donate a half million to gun control event

George & Amal Clooney

The Hollywood power couple announced Tuesday they will be marching in support of student survivors of the Parkland, Fla. shooting rampage, according to a statement from George Clooney provided to USA TODAY by his representative Stan Rosenfield.

Clooney and his human rights lawyer wife Amal, who gave birth to twins Ella and Alexander in 2017, donated $1 million to the Southern Poverty Law Center previous year following a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, that led to a woman's death. Students planning demonstrations in major cities next month to get the attention of lawmakers in the fight for gun reform are already earning some high-profile endorsements. Billionaire media mogul Oprah Winfrey joined the cause, pledging to match the Clooneys' donation on Tuesday.

Five students - Jacqueline Coren, Emma Gonzalez, Cameron Kasky, David Hogg, and Alex Wind - from the Parkland, Fla., high school, who witnessed 17 of their fellow classmates and teachers being murdered by a lone gunman with an AR-15 on February 14, announced the march on Washington, and other cities, to demand stricter gun control regulation to prevent future mass shootings.

The actor and human rights lawyer are pledging US$500,000 to the March event, which they will also attend. "Our children's lives depend on it", Clooney said in a statement. "These inspiring young people remind me of the Freedom Riders of the 60s who also said we've had ENOUGH and our voices will be heard".

Oprah Winfrey is doing her part to help end gun violence once and for all.

Nikolas Cruz, 19, has been charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder in the Valentine's Day massacre.
