Pakistan's top court rules against disqualified PM Sharif

Nawaz to hold ‘mammoth’ public meeting in city

Pakistan's Supreme Court ordered on Wednesday that ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif be removed as head of the political party he founded, six months after the court removed him as premier.

The court also directed Election Commission of Pakistan to remove Nawaz Sharif's name as President/Party Head of Pakistan Muslim League (N) from all relevant records.

The court said that anyone who is unable to fulfil the requirements of Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution - which state that a member of the parliament should be "truthful" and "righteous" - can not hold any public office, including the post of a party head.

The decision was taken on Wednesday by the 3-member court in Islamabad, which ruled that under the constitution a disqualified politician can't be president of political party, local media reported.

In July a year ago the Supreme Court ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif after an investigation - prompted by the Panama Papers leaks - showed his daughter and two sons owned offshore companies registered in the British Virgin Islands and used them to buy flats in London.

Earlier, a similar request to ban finance minister Ishaq Dar from leaving the country was not accepted, allowing him to go to London and never return.

The news men reports that on October 3, 2017, Sharif was re-elected as the president of the PML-N after Parliament passed a controversial bill.

He said the PML-N candidates may contest Senate election as independent candidates as the schedule is already out.

In January 2018, the Supreme Court had accepted petitions the petitions for hearing against the Election Act of 2017.

Former PM's daughter Maryam Nawaz also used the platform to express solidarity with her father following the verdict by simply posting Sharif's picture using with the caption "Main Bhee Nawaz Hoon", using an old hashtag (#NewProfilePic) which she had previously used to express solidarity with PMLN leaders.

Under The Representation of Peoples Act 1976, a disqualified person could not hold office of a party.

Mr Sharif and his supporters have repeatedly denied allegations of corruption, suggesting the three-time prime minister is the victim of a conspiracy driven by Pakistan's powerful military establishment.

Nawaz Sharif has already served as Pakistan's prime minister twice, once from 1990 to 1993, and from 1997 to 1999.
