Google Assistant Updated With Routines and Location-based Reminders

Google Assisted Nest

By the end of the year, Google expects it to work in more than 30 languages, up from 8 today.

Multilingual support that allows people to speak more than one language to Google Assistant is also planned for later this year, starting with English, French, and German. The new languages include Danish, Dutch, Hindi, Indonesian, Norwegian, Swedish and Thai. Also, users will now be able to set location-based reminders using their Google Assistant supported smart speaker.

As part of the same effort, Google will also work with carriers to help them similarly integrate their services into Assistant. What this means is that users will be able to have Assistant handle a handful of separate tasks with a single command. For example, if you say "Hey Google, I'm home", you can set your Google Assistant to turn on the lights, repeat any reminders set for your return home from work, and play some relaxing music.

Google Assistant is to gain a number of new features in the coming weeks, the search giant has announced ahead of next week's Mobile World Congress technology show in Barcelona. That way you can get your assistant to remind you to buy more eggs or bread while at the grocery store. Once that goal has been achieved, that gives Google Assistant the ability to reach 95% of all eligible Android phones around the world.

Back in October of past year, Google officially announced that Google Assistant, the digital assistant that is getting baked into as many different devices as possible, would learn new Routines to help get tasks done faster.

Google wants to make the Assistant more phone-friendly, so it has been working with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to bring all the Assistant's capabilities to non-Google Android phones. Customers will be able to use the Assistant to find out about their plan, add services, get support and more.

Over the next week the Assistant will become even smarter, by supporting routines and location-based reminders. An Assistant Mobile OEM program will enable companies "to build deeper integrations between the Assistant and device features, using natural language understanding and the conversational interfaces of the Assistant".

Whew, that's a lot and I'm really excited for everything that's coming to Assistant this year.

Google notes that these integrations and others from LG, Sony, and Xiaomi are coming soon. Sprint, Koodo, Telus, and Vodafone are already developing such integrations, and more partners will be announced soon.
