Winter Olympics 2018: Ester Ledecka makes medal history in Pyeongchang

Ledecka started skiing aged two and first strapped on a snowboard at five.

The absence of National Hockey League (NHL) players at the Winter Olympics was disappointing but "you don't need caviar every day", says the president of the International Ice Hockey Federation.

And after progressing through the rounds comfortably, she easily beat German Selina Jorg by more than half a second in the final.

Whenever Ledecka returns from her skiing exploits, Reiter said, it is akin to having to polish a rough diamond all over again.

Ledecka's win on skis was one of the biggest shocks of the Pyeongchang Games, coming in an event she had never earned a podium finish, but she dominated the field in her favoured snowboard event.

Whether on one edge or two, Czech snowboarder and Alpine skier Ester Ledecka pushed the limits at the Pyeongchang Olympics, leaving with two gold medals to show for her efforts.

Racing from 26th place in the super-G and with the event having already been called by one broadcaster, the 22-year-old stunned the crowd to win by 0.01 seconds.

"In the end, it was the smallest pressure on me.I was just riding and doing my best, and doing my top". In a world where athletes focus on their discipline with religious fervour, she has the gift to remain world class while dividing her attention.

Ester Ledecka kept them strapped on, concealing her eyes, as she sat down to answer questions at a news conference.

"It was quite tough to change myself back into a snowboarder", said Ledecka after her triumph.

Ledecka had the immediate challenge of facing 2014 Olympic champion Patrizia Kummer of Switzerland, but she proved no match as the Czech crossed the line 0.71 seconds in front.

"Do whatever you want", she said.

And while she was pleased to be back on her snowboard, she said that making the transition from skis to snowboard had felt odd at first. She made it look that way with a wire-to-wire exhibition of tight carving, flawless lines and pure domination.

"I love racing. This is the best thing about my job - the racing".

Alternating her workouts, she advanced far enough to join snowboarding's World Cup circuit in 2012 and then jump on the ski circuit in early 2016. He has also seen her deftly shift gears when moving from sport to sport.

"I'll get home and lie in bed and maybe sleep for a while", she said. They are with me the whole time and even my skiing coach was here today.
