Injured Nadal out of Indian Wells, Miami

Struggling Wawrinka withdraws from two Masters events

Stan Wawrinka has pulled out of the Masters events in Indian Wells and Miami as he continues to work his way back to full fitness following knee surgery. Nadal retired after conceding the first couple of games in the fifth set and was hoping to make a return to the Tour at this week's Abierto Mexicano in Acapulco, where he was the losing finalist previous year.

Nadal's withdrawal was greeted with dismay by Indian Wells tournament director Tommy Haas.

The injury I suffered during training right before Acapulco is in the same basic area as the injury I suffered in Melbourne [during the Australian Open].

"They are both wonderful events but coming back from a big surgery is complicated and after having played a few tournaments I have discussed with my team that it is best for me to build on the progress and go back to practice".

The 31-year-old Nadal is a three-time former champion in Indian Wells (2007, 2009 and 2013) and has reached five Miami finals (2005, 2008, 2011, 2014 and 2017).

It marked the sixth tournament in a row that Nadal has pulled out of or retired from - Basel, Paris, the London ATP Tour Finals, Brisbane, Australian Open and Acapulco. "We wish him all the best for a speedy recovery".

"I won't be able to play in Miami or Indian Wells as I need to recover", Nadal said.

World No.2 Nadal, a three-time victor at Indian Wells and five-time finalist at Miami, suffered his latest setback during a training session on Tuesday that forced him to pull out of this week's Mexican Open in Acapulco.

Nadal's latest injury will rob him of a big opportunity to wrest back the World No. 1 ranking from Federer before the claycourt swing.
