Netflix's wild documentary 'Icarus' exposes Russian doping scandal

The US film Icarus by Bryan Fogel about alleged Russian sports doping violations won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, organizers of the awarding ceremony said.

The brainchild of director Bryan Fogel and producer Dan Cogan, the feature film started by looking to document Fogel using performance-enhancing drugs to prepare for the multi-day amateur Haute Route.

After striking a chord during the Winter Olympics, Netflix's Icarus made an impression during the Oscars. During the course of the investigation, Fogel met Dr. Grigory Rodchenkov, the then-director director of Russia's Anti-Doping Center.

Icarus was nominated for the award alongside Abacus: Small Enough to Jail which revolves around migrants from China, Faces Places, Last Men in Aleppo, and Strong Island, which is also a Netflix production.

But their relationship took a freakish turn in November 2015, when news reports alleged that Rodchenkov was a key figure in Russia's state-sponsored doping program during the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Netflix reportedly paid $5 million to acquire the film. "We hope Icarus is a wake up call, yes about Russian Federation, but in the importance of telling the truth, now more than ever", Fogel said. The idea for the movie, which premiered at Sundance Film Festival, was sparked by disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong, who was stripped of his seven Tour de France wins in 2012 when he confessed to doping. Russian Federation has submitted requests to Interpol for arrest warrants for Rodchenkov to be extradited from the US and face criminal charges. "I go from, 'This is a insane story about Russian Federation and this scandal in sports, ' to all of a sudden Russian Federation is dominating the news".
