Airport Chaos: Technical issues causing major delays at Sydney Airport

Sydney airport delays

A technical problem hit the air hub of Australia's New South Wales state capital on Friday, when flight delays left crowds of worldwide and domestic passengers stranded for hours, according to Sydney airport authorities.

"We are experiencing outbound delays while we fix this technical issue which we're working to rectify as quickly as we can", she said.

If there's anywhere you would want to avoid this morning, it would be Sydney airport...

Would-be commuters were left stuck at check-in early on Friday morning after a technical issue resulted in the security screening being unable to open.

Outbound passengers at Sydney's T1 worldwide and T2 Domestic terminals were prevented from checking in for their scheduled flights, and airline staff were reportedly processing some passengers manually.

The security screening process at the International Terminal was interrupted after an incident.

Qantas' domestic Terminal 3 was not affected.

At about 8:30am, Sydney Airport reported they had resumed processing passengers as normal and were "working hard to catch up on delays", a Tweet from the company said.

The airport has now resumed processing passengers as per usual, it said on Twitter, without specifying details of the problem.

The technical failure was resolved about 6.30am, 90 minutes after passengers were initially stranded.

The security screening has also been closed as Queensland Police investigate the matter.

The airport is now experiencing technical issues at security and check-in desks, causing major interruptions to outbound flights.

Passengers said they had been waiting for nearly two hours as the departure lounge was cordoned off.
