France's far-right party now 'adult' and needs name change: Le Pen

Turkey court orders release of two more journalists in newspaper trial

"Let them call you racists, let them call you xenophobes, let them call you nativists". From his travels, Bannon said he is now certain "history is on our side".

His speech contained a familiar litany of attacks against global elites, Hillary Clinton and journalists.

Steve Bannon is set to give a speech Saturday at a major conference of the French right-wing party National Front (FN) in the northern city of Lille.

"She is not simply a rising star on the right in France. Because every day we get stronger and they get weaker", Bannon said in an address which drew strong applause from FN leader Marine Le Pen.

Her speech echoed numerous statements of Donald Trump, the man Bannon helped get elected to the USA presidency.

"Our dear President Trump said: 'We've had enough of globalists, '" he said. "I want Britain first for the British people, and I want France first for the French people".

The changes pave the way for a younger leadership circle to emerge, even if the party's ideological foundation remains unchanged: nationalist, identity-driven, anti-European Union, according to Jean-Yves Camus, an expert on the far-right.

Bannon met Marion, who temporarily withdrew from politics after her aunt's presidential election defeat last May, at the CPAC conservative conference in Maryland last month, where he said she was "absolutely electrifying".

Weidel's office said that Bannon, the former executive chairman of conservative news website Breitbart, could offer expertise in the areas of political strategy and alternative media channels.

Le Pen, the only candidate for National Front president, says the changes amount to a "cultural revolution" so the reshaped party can "implant itself, create alliances and govern".

Since taking over the National Front's presidency in 2011, Le Pen has worked to erase the footprint of her father - who has convictions for racism and anti-Semitism - to broaden the party's appeal.

Le Pen a year ago made it to the run-off in the French presidential election which she then lost to Emmanuel Macron, whose policies she said were "putting down the middle and lower classes". Last week, he published the first volume of his memoirs, "Son of the Nation", which feature an empathic defense of Philippe Pétain, the leader of France's Vichy government, a body that willingly collaborated with Nazi Germany during the war.

The party canvassed 51,000 members previous year about the name change proposal and on Saturday it emerged that just 52 percent had voted in favour among the 30,000 who responded.

Bannon had some advice for those who might be embarrassed by such a history.

"You fight for your country and they call you racist". Let them call you nativist. "Wear it as a badge of honor", he declared.

"They don't understand that we defend the same ideas, in the education field for her and in politics for me", she said.
