Jeff Sessions 'could fire a top Federal Bureau of Investigation official days before retirement'

FBI disciplinary office recommends firing ex-deputy director Andrew McCabe days before his retirement

According to The New York Times, the IG office has found that McCabe was not forthcoming during the review and the report findings ignited an Federal Bureau of Investigation disciplinary process that recommended McCabe be fired.

The Justice Department's inspector general concluded that Mr. McCabe was not forthcoming during the review, The Times reported.

No announcement is imminent, Justice Department spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores said in a statement.

McCabe stepped down from his post as the FBI's second-in-command in January after Trump repeatedly accused him of political bias, but remained on the payrolls in order to qualify for full retirement benefits.

According to the Times, a report from the Justice Department's inspector general regarding the internal review triggered an Federal Bureau of Investigation disciplinary process that recommended McCabe's firing. Obama EPA chief: Reg rollback won't stand MORE is looking at a recommendation to fire McCabe, people briefed on the matter told The New York Times for a report published Wednesday. Sessions now has to decide whether to accept the recommendation, according to the Times. But it seems McCabe hasn't been a Trump favorite, either.

The recommendation from officials with the Office of Professional Responsibility was sent to Justice Department leaders but has not been acted on yet, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the person wasn't authorized to speak publicly about an internal personnel matter.

The IG was probing a variety of different moves made by the FBI during its investigations during the 2016 election, including its handling of the Hillary Clinton email probe and whether McCabe should've recused himself from the investigation, given his wife ran as a Democrat for public office in 2015.

The disciplinary process is continuing at the highest levels of the Justice Department, and no decision has been made on the discipline McCabe will face.

Horowitz's report has not been released, and McCabe denies having misled anyone, a person familiar with the case said.

The Wall Street Journal report was written by Devlin Barrett, who is now a reporter with The Washington Post. In this instance, though, it might have been viewed as inappropriate because the discussion was focused on an ongoing criminal investigation.
