FIFA Approves Usage of Video Assistant Referee in 2018 World Cup

MPs are calling for the World Cup to be postponed and moved out of Russia

VAR will be used at the 2018 World Cup for the first time after the world football governing body formally approved the technology for the tournament in Russian Federation.

Infantino said after a meeting of the FIFA Council, "We are going to have in 2018, for the first time, a World Cup with VAR".

On March 3, the International Football Association (IFAB) was the first organization to "unanimously approve" the usage of the VAR during the upcoming World Cup in a meeting held in Zurich, Switzerland.

The system allows the referee or the video assistant to review decisions where a "clear and obvious" error is spotted.

"We look forward to discussing the merits of our bid with FIFA and soccer federations around the world in the weeks and months ahead".

"It's an essential decision, very important and historical decision".

According to IFAB, this move 'represents a new era for football with video assistance for referees helping to increase integrity and fairness in the game'.

The VAR system has been trialled worldwide, but its use in England during FA Cup games has been met with great cynicism.

Morocco is the only challenger to the joint Canada, Mexico and USA bid to stage the tournament.

Fifa, on Saturday night, ignored India's bid to host the 2019 under-20 World Cup and instead chose Poland as the venue for the tournament.

Morocco will earmark $15.8 billion on stadiums and infrastructure if it wins the bid to organize the 2026 World Cup, the bid committee said.

"We need to live with the times". A year ago the under-20 World Cup was hosted by South Korea.

Suarez, who led Ecuador at the 2006 World Cup in Germany and Honduras in 2014 in Brazil, remains a fan in general of the use of technology in football, which he has witnessed close up.

Stadiums would be built in Oujda and Tetouan organisers said, and new arenas to fit around 46,000 fans are planned in Casablanca, Marrakech, El Jadida, Meknes, Nador and Ouarzazate with the intention of downsizing them to unspecified capacities after the World Cup.
