Hyundai Cautious About Autonomous Cars After Uber Accident, Exec Says

Self-Driving Uber Car Crashes In Arizona — Kills Pedestrian

Elaine Herzberg was pushing a bicycle across the street in Tempe, Arizona at around 10pm on Sunday evening when she was struck by a auto.

Fox News reports that the operator of the self-driving Uber vehicle that killed a female Pedestrian in Phoenix recently was a convicted felon with court records showing that the man served almost four years in prison on charges of attempted armed robbery. Uber's CEO Dara Khosrowshahi announced a halt of the self-driving auto pilot in the wake of the incident, as the company nd authorities launched independent investigations.

To be clear, there was a human driver behind the wheel, though the self-driving Volvo SUV was in full autonomous mode when the accident happened.

The victim, Elaine Herzberg, 49, was walking her bike outside of the crosswalk.

The ride services company said it was suspending North American tests of its self-driving vehicles, which are now going on in Arizona, Pittsburgh and Toronto.

"Our hearts go out to the family and friends of the pedestrian who was struck crossing the street", Elcock said.

Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery's office will decide if any laws were broken. This incident appears to be one of those "corner cases" that Elon Musk refers to often as being the most hard for software engineers to deal with.

Several of the white SUVs loaded with LIDAR equipment have been spotted out of the roads since Apple was granted permission to test self driving cars publicly.

Jason Levine, executive director, Center for Auto Safety, a U.S. advocacy group, predicted that the accident would set consumer confidence in driverless technology back by years "if not decades".

The National Transportation Safety Board announced an investigation into the matter. Still, many researchers believe that more self-driving cars will ultimately be safer than their human counterparts - and they may be right. The latest incident with Uber raises question on whether autonomous cars are ready to be rolled out on public roads.

Investigators at the scene of the fatal accident involving a self-driving Uber in Arizona.

Real-world testing is critical to our efforts to develop self-driving technology.

It is the first time the autonomous technology leads to a fatality. Back in September 2017, a fatal crash was reported involving a Tesla in autopilot mode and a truck. But the Times noted that states are starting to allow companies to test cars without a person in the driver's seat and that California has said it will start allowing companies to test AVs without anyone behind the wheel beginning in April.
