WINTER STORM WARNING: Spring snowstorm on the way for DC region

The heavy wet snow may result in broken tree branches, which could lead to sporadic power outages.

A winter storm has been in effect since Thursday afternoon.

Yet another nor'easter is tearing through the Northeast, bringing heavy snow and gusty winds to Washington, D.C.; Philadelphia and NY this afternoon. Snow will develop across the Dakotas and build eastward into west central Minnesota late Friday morning, reaching east central MinnesotaFriday evening.

"A light glaze of ice is possible Friday night with freezing drizzle", the weather service predicted.

Norm Mack, the manager of roads and drainage with the City of Estevan's public works division, said the city has loaders patrolling each quadrant of the city, looking for large snow drifts plugging up the roads.

"I want warm! I'm done with the cold", said Yana Damoiseau, a pedestrian in New York City.

Out of thousands who lost power, just 165 customers were without electricity, PSEG Long Island reported about 8 p.m. Thursday.

Metro activated a severe weather plan Wednesday morning, reducing service to four trains an hour, delaying buses for up to an hour and a half and halting all MetroAccess trips.

The area's airports are lumbering back into service.

Snow and sleet falling across much of New Jersey and parts of New York City and Long Island on Tuesday evening are part of the first of two systems moving through the area. It will be held in Marshall Park across from Augusta Independent School.

Most major roadways in the state were clear, but residents were being urged to drive cautiously and allow extra travel time. A Bellmore woman shoveling snow died of a heart attack Thursday, authorities said, and a motorist was killed in a Wantagh State Parkway crash Wednesday. Conditions were calm in most areas early Wednesday, but forecasters said the storm was expected to kick into high gear by early afternoon. Alan Aberden, 26, of East Orange, has been charged with aggravated manslaughter, vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident, and receiving stolen property, according to the Essex County prosecutor's office.

Murphy had also declared a state of emergency Tuesday night ahead of the storm.
