March for Our Lives: Students around the country rally against gun violence

Organizers for the Woodland Hills Students Against Gun Violence

Hundreds of Ottawa high school students are expected to rally Saturday in solidarity with a much larger USA march calling for an end to gun violence.

Students from Parkland's Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School; other survivors of gun violence; José Andrés, humanitarian and world-renowned chef; Miles McKenna, Youtube star of MilesChronicals; and singer-songwriter Alex G will join.

Almost 200 people have died in school shootings since the 1999 massacre at Columbine High School in Colorado, which left 13 dead and inaugurated a relentless two-decade stretch of campus gun violence.

More than 800 marches are planned in cities across America and dozens of locations overseas to be held at roughly the same time. We need to unite across political parties.

Reese is an Orem High student who is organizing the march with nine other students across the state.

'Anybody who's in high school right now has been growing up on school violence, he said.

When I was overseas, the care packages they sent - filled with homemade cookies, scribbled messages in crayon, and hand-drawn stick figures - got me through some of the toughest times of my deployment. It took me several minutes to wrap my head around the fact that this was happening on USA soil.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Friday announced a proposed rule to ban so-called bump stocks that allow semi-automatic guns to fire more rapidly, similar to a fully automatic weapon. Guns kill more than 38,000 people and cause almost 85,000 injuries each year. The movement they are leading, which mushroomed after the recent school shooting in Parkland, Fl.

Gun violence is a leading cause of premature death in the USA, the American Public Health Association notes. As many as 3,500 were expected for Oakland's demonstration. "I spent time with him every day because we went to the same schools, shared the same friends and we even shared the same room", he said.

Hundreds of thousands of people have already descended upon Washington, D.C.

"I'd basically keep going until I shut down, like I'd just collapse, sometimes I'd be on the floor", Deitsch said.

'You can hear the people in power shaking, he said to loud applause.

"We may not see the change on Monday, we may not see it next week, but it makes a difference: They are demanding that this government no longer work for the NRA, that this government work for the people", Warren added.

I was 14 years old on the day of the shooting - the same age as seven of the murdered students.

It was the latest in a series of school massacre shootings that have sparked debate over gun restrictions in a country where a citizen's right to bear arms is a bedrock constitutional liberty.
