Car bomb kills four, driver near parliament in Somali capital

At least fourteen people were killed and 22 injured when an explosion went off outside a busy hotel in Somalia's capital on Thursday, followed by gunfire, police and rescue services said.

The blast happened barely a week after another deadly attack at Wehliye Hotel in the city center claimed over 14 lives.

Police said several others were injured.

"The toll could be higher", he added.

Three explosions over four days in or near the Somalian capital have left a trail of carnage, killing almost 20 people and injuring dozens of others, as Islamic militants unleashed a wave of attacks on the country. "I saw people being rushed to hospital and some of them were already dead", said witness Abdulahi Moalim.

Mogadishu has repeatedly been targeted by the Somalia-based jihadi group al-Shabab, the deadliest extremist group in Africa, which is seeking to topple the country's Western-backed government.

In February twin vehicle bombings left 38 people dead in Mogadishu.

The State of Kuwait has condemned in strong terms two terrorist bomb blasts that took place in the cities of Mogadishu and Kabul earlier this week, leaving more than 40 people dead.

It was the second vehicle bomb within hours in the Somali capital, where the terrorist group al-Shabab often targets attacks.

The U.S. military, which has stepped up efforts against al-Shabab in the past year with dozens of drone strikes, has said Somali forces are not yet ready.

But the Islamists still hold sway in large parts of the countryside and launch regular gun and bomb attacks on government, military and civilian targets in Mogadishu and ambushes on military convoys and outposts.
