Ban on trio means they miss mouth-watering series v India

Ball-tampering row: Air New Zealand takes a cheeky dig at 'naughty boy' Steve Smith

The ICC banned Smith for one test, gave Bancroft disciplinary demerit points but no ban at all, and didn't even charge Warner with any offense following the tampering episode in the third test last weekend.

"We are all so hurt and angry and maybe we weren't so sure how to react".

"There is a need for us to change the way we play".

Following this, Sutherland has officially reported Smith, Warner and Bancroft for breaching article 2.3.5 of Cricket Australia's Code of Conduct.

The probe found Warner guilty of "developing" the idea and for giving "instruction to a junior player to carry out a plan to take steps to attempt to artificially alter the condition of the ball using sandpaper".

Cricket Australia, however, is expected to officially confirm the announcement of their penalties later today.

"It was a grave mistake by three young men and we have to try and win the public back now and play the type of cricket that they expect us to play".

One of Australia's greatest ever cricketers who made a shocking error in judgement now being ushered through an airport like a convicted drug mule.

Cricket Australia's CEO James Sutherland continued to defend coach Darren Lehmann in the ball-tampering saga.

It will be hard for Australia's besmirched cricketers to reclaim their reputations when the dust settles on the ball-tampering scandal but the episode is nonetheless a chance for the team to reclaim some of its lost principles and values, feels former batsman Michael Hussey.

"The Aussies have said themselves that the brand of cricket they play is to win at all costs", he said.

The southpaw was also charged with providing advice to a junior player on how to tamper with the ball "including demonstrating how it could be done".

Sutherland said the probe appeared to show it had been an "isolated incident" had been a one-off, but he added: "If there are any credible allegations or suggestions to the contrary we have an obligation to investigate them".

Smith and Warner have received a 12-month ban while Bancroft is suspended for nine months after it was revealed that sandpaper was used on the ball during the third Test match against South Africa in Cape Town.

Cricket Australia say the only players aware of the plan were Bancroft, captain Smith and vice-captain Warner and the three players have been sent home ahead of the fourth Test, which starts in Johannesburg later this week.

He tweeted: "Many think the Bans are harsh (Me Included) but the precedent has now been set by CA".

"I haven't considered resigning and I have a job to do. I want to know what drove these players to take the game into their hands?"

Throughout his 15-minute long media briefing, Lehmann stressed on ensuring his players are not too mentally scarred by the episode.

Warner, however, will never captain Australia again. True, Australian teams have always stretched the rules of the game to gain whatever little edge they could get over their rivals.

"I am grateful that we are sitting in the South African change room without the shadows hanging over us".

"I would like to apologise to the Australian public and the cricket family".
