Russian Federation mall fire: Search for victims called off

Russia announces 3-day mourning for mall fire victims

People around the world are paying respect to the grieving city of Kemerovo, where dozens of people, mostly children, lost their lives in a shopping mall fire. Several people became emotional during the ceremony in Manezhnaya square.

Some protesters in Moscow shouted slogans calling for the sacking of Kemerovo's region and for "Russia without Putin".

Public anger in Kemerovo was reflected in protesters' placards.

At least 53 people were killed when a fire ravaged a busy shopping centre in an industrial city in Siberia, with many more reported still missing on Monday, including children, AFP reports.

A national day of mourning will be observed on Wednesday.

Confusion in recording the names of the dead, which included many who shared surnames, and difficulty identifying bodies may have led to the discrepancy, a spokesman for the activists told The Daily Mail.

"The ruling regime in my country is to blame for it". Russian investigators said the mall's fire exits were blocked and an alarm system was turned off. He is one of two arrested and three detained in connection with the case so far.

Senior regional official Vladimir Chernov said the fire may have started in the children's trampoline room. Funerals for the victims have begun in Kemerovo today. These are not armed hostilities.

"What's happening here? This isn't war, it's not an unexpected methane explosion at a coalmine. People, children came to relax", Putin said. "We're talking about demography and losing so many people", Putin angrily told officials on Tuesday.

A criminal investigation has been launched into the infliction of death by negligence, the fire safety rules violation, and the provision of services failing to meet safety requirements. One parent related a call, "My son was crying and asked, 'When will we be rescued?'" We are suffocating, we are dying.

Speaking in videotaped comments, he claimed the number of victims was much higher than reported.

The head of Russia's Investigative Committee, Alexander Bastrykin, said ticket collectors and other staff fled the scene, leaving movie-goers locked inside. "Everyone will be checked one by one, from those who issued licenses to those who were supposed to ensure safety", Putin said. The corresponding order was signed by the governor Aman Tuleyev.

The Russian leader also visited victims at a hospital including Ivan Zavarzin, 18, who survived the fire after jumping from the top floor.
