Tearful Smith takes 'full responsibility' for ball-tampering scandal

What's ball-tampering in cricket

"I want to make clear that as captain I take full responsibility", Smith said, shortly after arriving home at Sydney airport.

"It was a failure of leadership, my leadership. It is something I will regret for the rest of my life", the opener stated. "It hurts.it's. I just want to say I'm sorry for the pain I've brought to Australia and the fans, I'm devastated and I'm truly sorry".

"We are in the middle of such a great series and for something like this to overshadow the great cricket that has been played, that's not what I am about or what the team is about". I am absolutely gutted.

The case caused public outrage in Australia but the sentences have been criticised in some quarters as being disproportionately harsh, including by former Australian spin bowler Shane Warne. "You will hear from me in a few days", he added. "They'll support you if they see that, and they'll forgive you". "I apologize for my part and take responsibility for it".

South Africa had hoped Dale Steyn would be fit enough to provide further competition to an already fearsome pace attack but the 34-year-old is yet to make his first-class return following a heel injury sustained in the first Test with India in January, meaning the hosts name an unchanged squad.

" Cricket is the greatest sport in the world".

This Scandal also affected the Australian Cricket vastly as Coach Darren Lehmann stepped down as Head Coach and the naming rights sponsor Magellan pulling out of a major deal as naming rights to sponsor on Thursday.

In addition to his ICC and CA sanctions, Smith has been banned from this year's IPL and has lost numerous endorsement deals. Electronics giant LG axed Warner on Wednesday, while Weet-Bix and Commonwealth Bank dumped Smith. "Been thinking about my position for a while, despite telling media yesterday that I'm not resigning", he said.

"I have made a big mistake for allowing this to happen", said Smith.

Following Cricket Australia's investigation into the scandal, it has come to light that Smith and Cameron Bancroft knew what they were getting into but it was Warner who developed the "plan to attempt to artificially alter the condition of the ball".

The risky opener has been charged for instructing "a junior player to carry out a plan to take steps to attempt to artificially alter the condition of the ball using sandpaper".

The CA has also made it clear that while Smith still has a chance to captain Australia one year after the end of his ban, Warner will never be considered for a leadership role.

Lehmann remains in charge because Cricket Australia said he was unaware of what was going on.

He conceded that he should take some blame for the aggressive culture that has developed in the Australian team during his time as coach.
