Another big quake strikes off Papua New Guinea

BREAKING: Massive earthquake strikes off Australian coast – tsunami alert

Following the natural disaster tsunami waves of up to a metre high were forecast for some coasts across parts of Papua New Guinea.

An quake has struck off the coast of Papua New Guinea.

It hit near the coast at around 07:25 on Friday (21:25 GMT on Thursday).

The quake's epicentre was 156 kilometres south-south-west of Kokopo in East New Britain province. There were no immediate reports of damages or casualties, this is not unusual however, as the country's mountainous and remote landscape can make it hard to ascertain the extent of a quake's impact for several days.

At the Rapopo Plantation Resort on the coast, receptionist May Dovon said she had not heard of any casualties or damage, the agency adds.

"We felt the natural disaster, everything was moving so we went out of the building", Dovon told Reuters.

Earlier on March 26, an natural disaster measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale hit PNG and on March 24, another quake of the magnitude 6.8 shook the country.

The February 26 quake buried entire villages and killed more than 100.

The townspeople spent weeks trying to determine the damage caused by the quake, and are still struggling to get aid to the most remote and worst affected areas.
