Australia's Stannard fractures skull in 'one-punch' assault

The 35-year-old was recently picked as to captain his country at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast next month

Rugby Australia said it was "aware of an incident which has resulted in the hospitalisation of Australian Men's Sevens player James Stannard in Sydney overnight".

Stannard was taken to a nearby hospital, where he remains in a stable condition and was "diagnosed with a fractured skull", the governing body said.

Police say Stannard was standing outside the kebab shop when he was allegedly punched in an unprovoked assault, causing him to fall and strike his head on the pavement.

He is reported to be in stable condition and conscious in St Vincent's Hospital, while a 22-year-old British national has been arrested over the attack.

In the seconds after Stannard was assaulted the trio chased down his assailant and held him until police arrived.

Friend said Stannard has not sustained permanent damage from his injury.

Police have a 22-year-old man in custody. He's had a clearance from the neurosurgeon, the Ear, Nose and Throat specialist as well.

'I didn't think about rugby at all for about five days, ' Stannard said at the time.

The attacker was apparently detained by two of Stannard's teammates Lewis Holland and Ben O'Donnell, until police arrived.

Stannard had planned to retire at season's end but his future in the game is now unclear, with Rugby Australia unsure of a recovery timeline.

He only recently replaced injured captain Lewis Holland.

Stannard definitely will not play in next month's Commonwealth Games, but he will likely still travel with the team to the tournament, with Brandon Quinn elevated into the playing 12.

On Thursday evening, members of the Australian team had surprised Friend with a farewell dinner at Coogee's Crowne Plaza, ahead of his contract expiring in July.

"Yep I get it, people will assume because you're out at 3 o'clock in the morning that you're doing something wrong", he said.

"What staggers me is that we can get to a stage where we feel the need to act with such violence to an individual", he said.

Oliver, who is reportedly from Newcastle and had been backpacking in Australia, has been ordered to appear in court charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm on April 19.
