'Affluenza Teen' In Deadly Crash Released From Jail After 2 Years

'Affluenza teen' Ethan Couch prepares to leave jail Monday

A 20-year-old Texas man who as a teenager invoked "affluenza" in his defense after killing four people in a drunken wreck has been released from jail.

He pleaded guilty in 2013 to four counts of manslaughter and a juvenile court judge sentenced him to 10 years of probation, defying prosecutors who sought a 20-year prison sentence.

You may remember him better from a 2013 case, in which a psychologist testified that he was a victim of "affluenza".

Couch was convicted in the crash after driving a pickup truck into a group of good Samaritans helping a stranded driver.

He was three times over the legal limit for an adult when the crash happened, but in his trial, Ethan Couch's legal team blamed his rich background for leaving him unable to tell wrong from right.

Couch will remain under strict probation supervision, the county sheriff's office has said, even with his 21st birthday being only nine days away.

If he eventually obtains a conditional license through the DMV, Couch can only operate a auto with an ignition interlock device that also has a camera.

But Couch still ended up behind bars after he was caught playing beer pong in a 2015 video in violation of his probation. An worldwide search for the pair ensued but it ended when authorities tracked them down to a "resort town in Puerto Vallarta after they used a cellphone to order a pizza from Domino's", according to The Dallas Morning News.

Couch's attorneys, Scott Brown and Reagan Wynn, issued a statement Monday saying Couch has always been sorry for what he did. As punishment for fleeing with her son to Mexico, Tonya Couch is facing Money Laundering and Hindering the Apprehension of a Felon charges.

Couch will have a 9pm curfew when he is released and will have to wear a Global Positioning System and alcohol monitor.

Couch and his mother were apprehended in Mexico, and he was thrown in jail. Last week, though, she violated her probation when she failed her court-ordered drug test.

She was booked into the same jail as her son, only days before he was released.

Ethan Couch was extradited back to the USA and later sentenced to 720 days in jail for violating the terms of his probation. It was not immediately clear where Couch went after leaving jail.
