'Condom snorting challenge': Experts warn of risky trend

Condom snorting challenge is getting viral

In San Antonio, Texas, parents have reportedly started to attend classes about the condom-snorting challenge and other risky social media trends.

The Tide Pod challenge is a unsafe social media trend that involves the consumption of Tide Pods on social media videos.

Can we just go back to the ice bucket challenge or something? You read that right - according to USA Today, teenagers are posting videos of themselves snorting unwrapped condoms to social media and the videos are going viral. The nose is the opening to the airwaves, and there's always a risk that when you snort the condom it won't just come out your mouth but may get inhaled in the lungs, DC Inno reported.

KHOU says that while ingesting Tide can be poisonous, the most likely result from putting a condom up your nose is throwing up whatever you ate for dinner.

We concur. Let the record show that while we pooh-pooh the media's claims that condom snorting rises to the level of a "trend", we urge anyone tempted to try it to think hard about the possible consequences, which could, in fact, be dire.

The condom challenge (which is not to be confused with a different challenge of the same name, from 2015, in which teens would fill condoms with water and drop them on their friends' heads) is not a new concept. Condom snorting can also block your breathing and cause you to choke, especially since the prophylactic is much larger than a nostril, according to Bruce Y. Lee, an associate professor of global health at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, in a Forbes column. "The condom could easily get stuck in your nose or your throat, blocking your breathing or causing you to choke", Lee wrote.

The spermicidal lubricant found on most condoms can also irritate the inner lining of the nose and cause allergic reaction or infection. YouTube has since removed that video, but a summary from The Young Turks can be viewed below. Most of the 152 incidents involving condoms - 107 cases, to be exact - were related to ingestion, according to the statistics.
