IOC to Further Accompany South-North Korean Political Dialogue - IOC President

During his three day visit, Bach also met with North Korea's Sports Minister and National Olympic Committee chairman Kim Il-guk.

Kim Jong Un has told International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach that North Korea is committed to competing in the Tokyo and Beijing Games.

Both the North and South hailed the Pyeongchang Games as a significant step toward easing tensions on the Korean peninsula.

After participating in the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, North Korea would soon take part in the next Olympic events in Japan and China.

"This commitment was fully supported by the supreme leader of the DPRK in a very open and fruitful discussion I had with him yesterday", Bach asserted by using the country's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

The news agency added that Pyongyang had expressed its intent to participate in the Tokyo and Beijing, Yonhap reported.

"The joint march of the athletes from the two Koreas in Pyeongchang sent a very strong signal of peace from these Olympic Games to the world", he said.

Bach told Reuters during the February 9-25 Winter Olympics that he would make the visit on the North's invitation as part of an agreement between the International Olympic Committee and both North and South Korea.

Kim thanked the International Olympic Committee for its support and cooperation "regardless of any political climate and conditions", KCNA said. "We will continue to accompany this political dialogue through sport, by helping athletes to prepare for and compete in future editions of the Olympic Games", he said.

Kim's Olympic overtures follow Japanese media reports earlier this month of Tokyo exploring the possibility of a meeting between Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and the North Korean leader after the surprise announcement of a proposed summit with Trump.

The meeting comes less than a week after Kim traveled to Beijing to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Since the Olympics, the North has pushed forward with a flurry of diplomatic moves.

Kim's talks with Bach appear to have focused mostly on sports. Of the 22 North Korean athletes who competed in Pyeongchang, only two won places on merit and the other 20 were granted special spots by the IOC.
