Mack Horton claims Australia's first gold medal

Taneka Kovchenko has been forced to retire from diving on the eve of the Commonwealth Games

"It got me all teary; so many people have supported me through the past two years and to be able to share that with the rest of Australia was something very special to me".

Over the roar of an electric crowd, the commentators proclaimed it the "Ashes of cycling" as Australia outperformed England to take three golds in the velodrome this evening.

"I think change is always going to cause some criticism but I think he's the sort of guy who's happy to take the blame, whether it's his fault or not and that' what a true leader does".

Horton became Australia's first 400 metres freestyle victor at the Commonwealth Games since the great Ian Thorpe with his victory.

Team England had been hot on the Aussies' heels for the first half of the race but slipped down to third place in the third leg when Freya Anderson came up against Canada's Rebecca Smith.

Schoenmaker, swimming at her first Commonwealth Games, controlled virtually the entire women's 200m breaststroke to pull away from England's Molly Renshaw and Chloe Tutton of Wales.

That was 0.374s quicker than a New Zealand foursome had gone before.

On third day of Gold Coast Commonwealth Games 2018 Australia is on top with 20 Gold, 17 silver and 20 bronze medals.

"It was a huge honour to stand on the podium and be New Zealand's first medal of the games".

Emerging star Titmus and McKeon were then pipped in the 200m freestyle final by Canada's Ruck.

"I told the boys to back off a bit because the shark was right next to us", he added.

Australia lead the medal table in the pool on 32, with 11 golds.
