Davis Cup: Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer put Spain into semi-finals

Philipp Kohlschreiber reveals tactics to face Rafael Nadal

Germany led 2-1 after Saturday's doubles but world number one Nadal levelled the tie with a 6-1 6-4 6-4 victory over Alexander Zverev.

The 31-year-old Nadal hardly put a foot wrong on his return, having produced 14 of his 30 winners in the opening set of a lopsided contest.

"The first set was fantastic", Nadal said.

"But in general it was a very important match and I am very happy".

A prowling Nadal came up with 21 winners and world number four Zverev racked up 57 unforced errors as the 16-time grand slam champion extended his winning run to a Davis Cup-record 24 matches.

Victory meant Nadal set the record for the longest Davis Cup winning streak in combined singles and doubles matches with 23 in a row.

The Spanish pair won just two of 20 break points and fell 2-1 down in the tie, to leave Nadal - who returned from two months on the sidelines to beat Philipp Kohlscreiber on Friday - needing to overcome Zverev in Sunday's singles.

Spain joined the USA, France and Croatia in the semi-finals of the Davis Cup after a dramatic comeback on the final day in Valencia.

Kohlschreiber twice fought back from a set down, but former French Open runner-up Ferrer broke in the 11th game of the decider and held his nerve on serve after nearly five hours on court.

Holders France will host Spain in the final four after beating Italy. "I feel comfortable back on the clay", Nadal said on the Davis Cup website.

Ferrer needed almost five hours to defeat Kohlschreiber 7-6 (1), 3-6, 7-6 (4), 4-6, 7-5 at the packed bull ring in Valencia, guaranteeing Spain's return to the semifinals for the first time since 2012.

Croatia will meet the United States in the semis in September following Jack Sock and Ryan Harrison's doubles win against Belgium's Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen on Saturday which gave the US a 3-0 win.

Croatia also made it into the last four as Australian Open runner-up, Marin Cilic, crushed Kazakhstan's Mikhail Kukushkin 6-1 6-1 6-1 to seal their tie 3-1. The match that they both played was unbelievable.

Last year's losing finalists Belgium struggled without their top-ranked players David Goffin and Steve Darcis, leaving the Americans with a straightforward task to reach the semis for the first time since 2012.
