Japan Appoints Nishino As Coach

After guiding Japan to a first place finish in their AFC qualifying group past year, Halilhodzic's position as manager came under scrutiny when his side's form dropped over the March internationals.

"I can't believe they are doing this just before the World Cup", said Yukina Muranaka, 29, a Tokyoite who is planning to travel to watch Japan play in Russian Federation, calling the decision "poorly planned".

Japan have officially announced the sacking of manager Vahid Halilhodzic - a surprise decision with the FIFA World Cup only two months away.

"To those who attacked me I say: bad luck for you because I'm going to carry on doing my job", Halilhodzic is cited as saying by News Channel Asia in September.

Nishino, 63, is one of the country's finest footballers as was part of the team that beat a Brazil side with Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos 1-0 at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Japan newspaper, Hochi Daily also reported that a sense of unity was lacking between the players and the coach.

"Sometimes I'd really like them to be more aggressive, more street-smart, more vicious", said the former Nantes and Paris Saint-Germain striker.

Japan will be playing in their sixth consecutive World Cup and have only twice reached the knockout round. This time the JFA parted ways with the Bosnian after a crisis meeting decided Halilhodzic's time with Japan was up.

He once reportedly banned his players from smiling, and he found himself in trouble with authorities on two separate occasions after traffic accidents in 2015 and 2017.

Japan have three friendly matches scheduled before opening their World Cup campaign against Colombia on June 19.

However, pressure on the 65-year-old has been building and a draw with Mali and defeat to Ukraine in friendly matches last month did nothing to ease concerns about the team's form heading into the World Cup.

The tournament in Russian Federation will be the sixth successive World Cup appearance by the Blue Samurai, who made it to the last 16 in 2002 when Japan co-hosted the tournament with South Korea and again in 2010.
